Through strong safety leadership, we can create and maintain safe workplaces for all our people. Our safety culture empowers every individual to take responsibility for their own safety as well as for the safety of their colleagues and the communities in which they work. We at Vedanta believe that safety is a value that is paramount and in line with our safety related ethos, initiatives like right to refuse, driver management center etc. have been undertaken keeping in mind the needs & necessity of all workers.

We routinely assess our safety performance–by benchmarking our practices with peers, with an eye to build a best-in-class safe workplace for our employees and contract workers.

Management Performance in Occupational Health & Safety

Through strong safety leadership, we can create and maintain safe workplaces for all our people. Our safety culture empowers every individual to take responsibility for their own safety as well as for the safety of their colleagues and the communities in which they work. We at Vedanta believe that safety is a value that is paramount and in line with our safety related ethos, initiatives like right to refuse, driver management center etc. have been undertaken keeping in mind the needs & necessity of all workers.

A comprehensive Group-level HSE policy and several safety standards are in place to ensure health and safety are embedded as a value across our operations. The company undertakes several actions to enhance the safety culture of the organization. These include:

Focus on “Critical Risk Management” to reduce hazardous activities at site
Launch of cross business audits to ensure best safety practices are transferred across BUs
On-boarding of a specialized safety agency to improve the safety culture at all BUs and their leadership teams
Implementation and horizontal deployment of fatality learning across Vedanta, led by our business CEOs

India’s first underground ambulance and first aid station

In FY'2022, Rampura Agucha Mine developed India’s first underground first aid room & underground ambulance station. This occupational health & medical facility has been established in underground mine at a depth of 600 meters from surface.

This first aid room is equipped with air conditioning for maintain ambient environment and has all the necessary medical & rescue equipment like A.E.D (Automatic External Defibrillators), ECG machine, Oxygen Cylinders, blood pressure monitor, saline facility with a stretcher bed. The mine will also use this facility emergency situations like fire & flooding. The management has provided rescue trained persons at this underground centre in every shift with advanced ambulance with oxygen facilities and AED for providing CPR.

BALCO’s senior management has vouched for safety and integrity as their prime focus. They strive to ensure a conducive and safe working environment and have undertaken several programs to demonstrate Visible Felt Leadership.

In order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the plant at night, the management implemented the Night Surveillance Initiative. The Night Surveillance team promotes smooth flow of operations inside the plant through a regulation-based, proactive safety oversight system. The team comprises three executives with one member from the senior/middle management supported by an executive each from safety and security teams. The primary function of the team is to visit the SBUs (Metal, Power and Enabling) to identify unsafe operational practices, violation of cardinal rules/zero tolerance rules, violation of standing order provisions and any other applicable guidelines laid down under the code of business conduct.

Over 150 employees are involved in this process, conducting cross-functional audits and have helped highlight several gap areas and best practices. The initiative is supported by an online platform providing immediate learnings and course corrections. This initiative has provided BALCO an additional platform to spread the awareness on safety and demonstrated the commitment of the senior leadership team towards HSE & the well-being of the workforce.
