Our Zinc operations comprise Hindustan Zinc Limited in India and the assets of Zinc International across Namibia, South Africa and Ireland. Mined metal production in 2016-17 was 907 kt in India and 156 kt in International locations.
Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) owns and operates a fully integrated zinc-lead business. HZL is one of the world's largest integrated zinc-lead producer by volume. Vedanta Limited, an India-listed susidiary of Vedanta Resources Limited, owns 64.9% of the share capital of HZL, while the Government of India remains an equity partner and holds a 29.5% stake. HZL is listed on Indian stock exchanges (NSE and BSE).
HZL has facilities located in Chanderiya, Dariba and Zawar in the state of Rajasthan, along with Zinc processing and refining facilities in Haridwar, and Zinc, lead & silver processing and refining facilities in Pantnagar, both in the state of Uttarakhand. The operations comprise five lead-zinc smelters, one rock phospate mine, four hydrometallurgical zinc smelters, two lead smelters, one pyro-metallurgical lead-zinc smelter, seven sulphuric acid plants and nine captive power plants.
Our international zinc operations include the Skorpion Zinc Mine and Refinery in Namibia, Black Mountain Mining (BMM) in South Africa, and the Lisheen Mine in the Republic of Ireland. On 27 July, 2015 Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) broke ground at the Gamsberg project, one of the world’s largest undeveloped zinc deposits. This commences Vedanta’s plans to turn the Southern African region into one of the most important suppliers of zinc in the world and to bring far-reaching socio-economic and environmental benefits to the region.
As part of its vision for an integrated zinc business in Southern Africa, Vedanta previously announced the approval of a US$782 million investment over 3 years; the majority of the investment, approximately US$630 million, will go towards developing the open pit zinc mine, concentrator plant and associated infrastructure at Gamsberg. The balance will be used to convert the refinery at Skorpion Zinc in Rosh Pinah, Namibia, enabling it to refine zinc sulphide concentrates from the Gamsberg Mine into special, high grade zinc metal.
